The First On-Chain CC0 Sample Library

TL;DR

  • In November, we announced we were compiling submissions for an open-source on-chain sample library. Over 150 people submitted applications and we compiled a community library of 406 samples from 39 artists.
  • As of today, all CC0 samples have been minted as custom NFTs and airdropped to the 39 contributing artists.
  • Users in the private beta can now use these samples to compose music NFTs for free in Arpeggi’s revamped in-browser DAW. Private beta applications are open for sign up at beta.arpeggi.io.

Where we left off

On November 24th, 2021 we published an article in which we called on our community to submit samples to create the first-ever on-chain open-source sample library.

Our goal: Compile one-shot samples, release them as CC0 for copyright-free use, mint them as NFTs, and make the first library of composable samples that sets the foundation for open collaboration and development of on-chain music.

Today, the first on-chain community CC0 sample library is a reality. As of this morning, all 406 CC0 samples have been minted as custom NFTs and airdropped to the 39 contributing artists. The CC0 sample library is available for immediate use in Arpeggi’s revamped in-browser DAW where users can make and mint custom music NFTs for free. All current beta registrations have been granted access to the platform. Didn’t make it in? Sign up today at beta.arpeggi.io and hop in our Discord to get started.

Here’s how we got here.

Compiling the CC0 Sample Library

Following the announcement, we received over 150 applications from producers around the world interested in contributing to the open-source library. Of these applications, we received over 1100 samples from 39 artists. Working with our in-house audio engineer, we whittled the library down to 406 samples to ensure we made the highest-quality sounds available for use.

Today, we are pleased to announce that we have minted all 406 samples as unique NFTs on Polygon and airdropped them to their respective creators. We were happy to accept at least one sample from each of the 39 artists who submitted their work.

After receiving such tremendous support from our community of musicians, we asked them why they submitted their samples. Their message was clear: attribution, collaboration and a desire to contribute to the future of music creation - open-source and community driven. We believe our community's willingness and excitement to contribute samples is a signal that the future of web3 music creation is open-source and collaborative.

What’s next for Arpeggi music creation?

We compiled CC0 samples from generous and forward-thinking artists and put them on-chain. But what does that mean for Web3 music and Arpeggi?

For web3 music…

The Arpeggi CC0 Sample Library can be use to make infinite songs. These songs will guarantee attribution to original creators via ARP.

Currently, artists don’t have a good system to receive credit when their work is used because of convoluted and opaque Web2 music infrastructure that incentivizes musicians to protect reuse of their music instead of promoting it. To solve this, we developed the Audio Relations Protocol (ARP), a decentralized on-chain music registry, for registering and tracking the use of music primitives (songs, loops, and sounds). ARP guarantees that when artists’ sounds are used, they get credit, allowing artists to be more comfortable sharing their sounds with the world.

The initial samples shared by our community are the foundational musical building blocks of the ARP registry, and will power open-source music creation. Artists can now use these on-chain samples to create and mint songs as NFTs, all while guaranteeing attribution to the sample’s creators.

We’ll be sharing more about ARP and its applications across web3 music in the coming weeks, but for now you can view our documentation here.

For Arpeggi…

On top of ARP, we have built Arpeggi V2, a web3 music creation ecosystem. Arpeggi allows anyone to compose, tokenize, discover, and remix songs on-chain while tracking all usage within ARP.

At the core of Arpeggi V2 is Arpeggi Studio, an in-browser Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for composing, publishing and minting songs as music NFTs. Arpeggi Studio is powered by ARP, meaning artists have full access to the entire CC0 sample library to make new music. But artists have access to much more than the sample library: every song created in Arpeggi Studio is also registered into ARP meaning sounds, loops and songs are able to be remixed and sampled with guaranteed on-chain attribution.

Last but not least - a thank you to our contributors

At Arpeggi, we envision a future of transparent, open-source and collaborative music creation. While we have only begun our journey, the steps we have made wouldn’t have been possible without the 39 artists who contributed samples to the community CC0 sound library.

To each and every artist: thank you!
